John Schmidt Obituary
John E. "Jack" Schmidt, 95, of Burlington, died Tuesday, November 28, 2023, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born February 26, 1928, in Ottumwa, IA, he was the son of Clarence and Grace Wren Schmidt. On September 26, 1950, he married Patricia Jeanne Hervey in Ottumwa. She preceded him in death on January 2, 2012.
He attended St. Ambrose University.
He worked as a purchasing agent for the Kenmar Manufacturing Company in Ottumwa for seven years, then as an upholstery buyer for Chittenden & Eastman in Burlington. He was a salesman at MPI in Fort Worth, Texas for 25 years and most recently, a salesman at Furniture City in West Burlington.
He was a U.S. Marines Veteran, serving from 1946 until 1948. While enlisted, he played basketball on the official Marine team.
He was devoted to his Catholic faith and was a member of Divine Mercy Parish. He had a strong faith and said the rosary daily. Jack was devoted to his family and enjoyed attending family gatherings and spending time at their cabin on the backwaters of the river. He also liked to socialize with his friends at Joe's Inn. He was a great storyteller and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a dedicated supporter of Burlington Notre Dame School and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He followed High School sports across the state and would often comment on which schools had strong teams each year. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 10102, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League, a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Survivors include his son, Greg (Maureen) Schmidt of Leawood, KS; six daughters, Christine (Jim) Corkery of Bridgeton, MO, Janet Schmidt of Muscatine, Julie (Pat) Kelley, Carol (Larry) Lindhart, Lisa (Mike) Smith all of Burlington, Anne (Chris) Lansing of Davenport; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews; two sisters, Sue Tharp of Sheboygan, WI, and Helen Clemens of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers, Msgr. Robert Schmidt and Phillip Schmidt.
Visitation with the family to receive friends will be from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM Friday, December 1, 2023 at St. Paul's Catholic Church.
Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard following the visitation.
The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Schmidt will be 11:00 AM, Friday, December 1, 2023 at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul's Catholic Church with Fr. Jake Greiner as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at The Drake following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Burlington Notre Dame Schools and Birthright of Burlington.
