NDMark Luttenegger Obituary

Mark Joseph Luttenegger, 88, formerly of Burlington, died Friday, July 14, 2023, at theTexas Health Hospital in Frisco.

Born August 11, 1934, in Burlington, Mark was the son of Adolf William and Josephine A.Saftig Luttenegger.

A graduate of the University of Iowa with a B.S. in Engineering in 1957, Mark remained a proud Hawkeye throughout his life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in Japan during from 1957-1960 and worked as an electrical engineer for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 35 years until his retirement.

On November 25, 1961, Mark married the love of his life, Mary Beth Millmeyer, in Fort Madison, IA and remained a devoted husband for 62 years.

Mark and Mary Beth raised four children together and their home was a gathering place for neighbors and friends, for laughter, play, wrestling, and endless games of baseball and basketball. There was always room for someone extra at the dinner table. When they weren’t hosting neighborhood revelry, you would most likely find them at a concert or a sporting event at Burlington Notre Dame, cheering on the Nikes.

Anyone who knew Mark knew him to be a deeply good man-easy with his smile and laughter, his tenor voice and love of music in the choir at St. John’s parish, and his many kindnesses to family, friends, and strangers alike. Often in his life he gave to others very quietly or anonymously with devotion and generosity. At home, there was very little that Mark couldn’t or didn’t fix or improve upon. He was an engineer, through and through, relishing his home and car maintenance and repair projects.

Throughout his life, there was never a time when Mark was not at Mary Beth’s side and she at his. After his retirement, Mark and Mary Beth traveled extensively and opened their hearts to people of all different cultures and lifestyles. They volunteered together for years at St. Vincent de Paul’s food bank and made frequent visits to their grandchildren, eventually moving full time to Little Elm, Texas to be near the youngest ones.

Mark’s survivors include his wife, Mary Beth Luttenegger of Little Elm, TX; Steve Luttenegger of Des Moines, IA, Matthew and Tracey Luttenegger of Flower Mound, TX, Jonathan Luttenegger of Cedar Rapids, IA, Theresa Luttenegger of Arcata, CA and Cynthia Greene of West Branch, IA. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Cindy, Landon, Peyton, and Grant.

Mark is dearly missed by his wife and family.

Mark is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Franklin, and two infant sisters, Irene and Pauline.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry, in Burlington, Iowa.
