Three years ago, the Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville high school boys wrestling team hoisted the Class 2A team championship at Wells Fargo Arena.

The Nikes are poised to make another run at a Class 2A state team title this week.

Top-ranked Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville will have 11 wrestlers competing in the state tournament, which gets under way Wednesday and concludes Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The Nikes won the team title at a Class 2A district tournament Saturday at Centerville, racking up 224 points. Creston was second with 161 1/2 points, while Fairfield was third with 144 points.

Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union was fifth with 110 points and Keokuk was eighth with 23 points.

Notre Dame-West Burlington crowned six champions — Kohen Dietzenbach at 106 pounds, Colt Boyles (120), CJ Davis (126), Kaiden Dietzenbach (138) Kael Cook (150) and Blake Wilson (165). Advancing as district runner-ups were Rowan Berndt (113), Jared Glendening (132), Dirk Boyles (157), Joey Glendening (175) and Bridge Anderson (190).

“We had a really good weekend,” ND-WB/Danville coach Bill Plein said. “I thought the kids wrestled exceptionally well, even the kids that didn’t get through. They wrestled smart and worked hard. It was a really good weekend.”
