If I Were Mayor Essay Winner & Food Drive 01/09/23 – 02/06/23
January 6, 2023 –
Each year, the Iowa League of Cities hosts an ‘If I Were Mayor..’ Essay Contest, challenging
7
th grade students to think and write a one page essay about being Mayor. The City of Burlington
partners with local schools annually, with the winning essay moving on to the state level to
represent our local youth and the city of Burlington. The essays are judged based on creativity,
clarity, sincerity of thought and proper use of grammar.
This year’s winner, chosen to represent Burlington, is Ava Fruehling. In addition to Ava's essay
getting submitted to the state, she will be awarded a $100 cash prize, sponsored by Burlington
Rotary Club, and will be recognized by City Council during the City Council Meeting on
Monday, February 6th. Join City Council and Staff in Congratulating Ava!
Ava’s essay had a central theme of food scarcity and the effects on families and students. The
City of Burlington will be hosting a food drive beginning Monday, January 9th until Monday,
February 6th in Ava’s name. Food items can be brought to City Hall at 400 Washington St.
during business hours and will be given to local pantries to help stock the shelves.
